In winter 2024, a major cold chain logistics center in Shandong experienced a main drive motor failure in its quick-freeze tunnel. After overnight shutdown, the motor refused to restart. Disassembly revealed that the conventional lithium-based grease had fully solidified into a waxy substance, locking the rotor. Repair took six hours, halting the entire production line and causing direct losses exceeding ¥150,000.
This is not uncommon. As cold chain logistics expands rapidly, the special requirements for motors in low-temperature environments are often overlooked. When operating below -20°C, standard motors can experience failure rates 3–5 times higher than at ambient temperature.
Conventional mineral-based grease becomes highly viscous or even solidifies below -20°C. At startup, rolling elements cannot form an effective oil film, resulting in dry friction and wear rates 10* faster. Over time, cage fracture and raceway spalling become common failure modes.
Standard polyester enameled wire loses toughness significantly below -30°C. After repeated thermal cycling, micro-cracks develop in the enamel film, leading to turn-to-turn shorts. IEEE research shows each 100 cycles (-40°C ↔ +20°C) reduces insulation life by approximately 8%.
Frequent door openings in cold storage allow humid air to enter. Upon contact with the cold motor surface, moisture instantly condenses and freezes. Meltwater seeps into terminal boxes and bearing chambers, reducing insulation resistance and causing bearing corrosion. Motors with IP54 protection in cold storage have an average MTBF of only 6–8 months.
For cold storage applications, the recommended marking is:
Ex e IIC T6 Gb
Increased safety (Ex e) offers clear advantages over flameproof (Ex d) in cold storage: lighter weight, better heat dissipation, and easier maintenance without heavy flameproof joints. Temperature class T6 (max surface temp 85°C) covers virtually all cold storage environments.
